Re-Registrations
•  Previous YELLOW Registrations are needed to reregister your vehicle.
•  You will also need current insurance card and current mileage.
(Your vehicle must be previously registered in West Bath to use this service)
 
New Registrations – (Dealer Sales) (NEW PLATES)
•  Application for Certificate of Title
•  Copy of Sales paperwork showing you have already paid Maine sales tax.
•  Window Sticker if “NEW” vehicle
•  Current Insurance Card
•  Current Mileage
 
New Registrations – (Private Sales) (NEW PLATES)
•  Title From Previous Owner  (if 1995 or newer)
(Assignment of Ownership must be filled in completely on the reverse side of the Title.   Note:  All parties listed on the title as owner(s) must sign as the seller(s).
Sellers who have misplaced their title can request a replacement title online.) If the title shows that there was a lienholder, the title must have the lienholders signature and date of release or a Certificate of Lien or Release of Lien form must be attached.
 •  Bill of Sale: Complete with date of sale, description of vehicle, VIN, Year, Make, Model, to whom sold, the amount of the sale,  full name, address and signature of seller(s). Click here to print a blank Bill of Sale.
•  Current Insurance Card
•  Current Mileage
 
TRANSFERS  - PLATES AND EXCISE CREDIT TO NEW VEHICLE
In addition to above: (YELLOW) Registration (from vehicle sold, traded, or junked). The previous plates may be used on the new vehicle. If time remains on the registration, excise and registration credits may be applied to the new registration.
 
SPECIAL SITUATIONS
There are many circumstances that require additional documents.
Examples: New Residents, Out-of-State Sales, Leased Vehicles,  Name Changes, Additions, Deletions, etc. Please call our office if you need to know “what to bring”.
  
PLEASE NOTE: Payments made at the Town Office are accepted by cash or a check made Payable to: “TOWN OF WEST BATH”. 
We accept MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or VISA.  (There is a 2.5% charge for using a credit/debit card.)
 
HOW TO ESTIMATE THE COST OF YOUR
NEW VEHICLE REGISTRATION ( BASIC INSTRUCTIONS )
(These are basic instructions only.  Some circumstances might result in a different method,
i.e. big trucks, campers, motorcycles, trailers, etc.)
 
EXCISE TAX
Excise tax is figured by obtaining the "MSRP”
(Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail  Price) (when the vehicle was new)
 
On a “NEW” vehicle the Dealer will provide you with the Moroney Label (window sticker).  The first year mil rate is .024.  Use the “bottom line price” and deduct the “delivery or destination charges”.  The Balance x .024 = first year excise tax amount.
           
Example:  2005 Ford Crown Victoria  
Bottom line sticker price           $26,165.00
Delivery charge       -750.00
Total Net Price $25,415.00
Multiply by 1st year mil rate                     x .024
FIRST YEAR EXCISE TAX      $609.96

On a “USED” vehicle – you will need the MSRP which can be obtained from the previous owner’s registration, the original window sticker, or you may bring your paperwork into the Town Office for an estimate.
 
The MSRP is multiplied by the mill rate according to the following chart.

   .004                    =6th year and older
 
On TRANSFERS, you may use credit of excise already paid on a vehicle traded, sold or junked.
(The new vehicle will keep the same expiration date as the old vehicle.)
